Another beautiful day in NH. Today, we headed north near Laconia (about an hour from Newmarket) and visited my niece, Jessica, and her boyfriend, Duane in Winisquam, NH. We had a nice relaxing lunch and hung out on their property basking in the sun, drinking a beer, and watching the snow melt. We had interrupted Duane's porch building, but I'm sure he didn't mind the break. Amber also had a great time running around the yard, although her mobility was somewhat limited after yesterday's outting.
They have really done a great job with their house since we saw it last year when they had just moved in. Duane has some hunting trophies that they have tastefully displayed in their house. Here they are: a wild boar; a mountain goat (I think); and a deer.
We left there and headed toward Canterbury, NH, as Richard had wanted to check out the Shaker Village. On the way there, we saw more wildlife -- these were alive...
So, we finally found the Shaker Village, but only the gift shop was open on Sunday. So, we checked that out and chatted with the woman in the gift shop who has been there for 16 years. She was really informative and interesting. We plan to go back this summer to take a full tour. They also serve lunch at The Shaker Table Restaurant or if you are interested in a new place for Sunday brunch, you may want to check that out.
Evidently, the last Canterbury Shaker, Sister Ethel Hudson, died in 1992. There are only 4 living Shakers and they are up in the Maine village. For more information and directions to the Canterbury village, go to www.shakers.org. They are located only 20 minutes from Concord, NH.
Best,
Chris & Richard
